“You are not allowed to do that” attempts to manage someone else. A boundary is more specific: “If the conversation becomes insulting, I will pause and return when we can speak respectfully.”

A restorative pause is different from unexplained silence used as punishment. Name what is happening and, when possible, when you intend to reconnect.

Begin with a lower-stakes situation. The ability to name and hold boundaries develops through practice, not a single dramatic conversation.
